What is gastritis?

Gastritis is a condition in which the stomach lining "known as the mucosa" is inflamed. The stomach lining contains special cells that produce acid and enzymes, which help break down food for digestion, and mucus, which protects the stomach lining from acid. When the stomach lining is inflamed, it produces less acid, enzymes, and mucus.
Gastritis may be acute or chronic. Sudden, severe inflammation of the stomach lining is called acute gastritis. Inflammation that lasts for a long time is called chronic gastritis. If chronic gastritis is not treated, it may last for years or even a lifetime.
Erosive gastritis is a type of gastritis that often does not cause significant inflammation but can wear away the stomach lining. Erosive gastritis can cause bleeding, erosions, or ulcers. Erosive gastritis may be acute or chronic.
The relationship between gastritis and symptoms is not clear. The term gastritis refers specifically to abnormal inflammation in the stomach lining. People who have gastritis may experience pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen, but many people with gastritis do not have any symptoms.
The term gastritis is sometimes mistakenly used to describe any symptoms of pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen. Many diseases and disorders can cause these symptoms. Most people who have upper abdominal symptoms do not have gastritis.

What Are the Symptoms of Gastritis?
Many people with gastritis do not have any symptoms, but some people experience symptoms such as:
  • upper abdominal discomfort or pain

  • nausea

  • vomiting
These symptoms are also called dyspepsia.
Erosive gastritis may cause ulcers or erosions in the stomach lining that can bleed. Signs of bleeding in the stomach include
  • blood in vomit

  • black, tarry stools

  • red blood in the stool

What causes gastritis?

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection causes most cases of chronic nonerosive gastritis. H. pylori are bacteria that infect the stomach lining. H. pylori are primarily transmitted from person to person. In areas with poor sanitation, H. pylori may be transmitted through contaminated food or water.
In industrialized countries like the United States, 20 to 50 percent of the population may be infected with H. pylori. Rates of H. pylori infection are higher in areas with poor sanitation and higher population density. Infection rates may be higher than 80 percent in some developing countries.
The most common cause of erosive gastritis "acute and chronic" is prolonged use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin and ibuprofen. Other agents that can cause erosive gastritis include alcohol, cocaine, and radiation.
Traumatic injuries, critical illness, severe burns, and major surgery can also cause acute erosive gastritis. This type of gastritis is called stress gastritis.
Less common causes of erosive and nonerosive gastritis include
  • autoimmune disorders in which the immune system attacks healthy cells in the stomach lining

  • some digestive diseases and disorders, such as Crohn's disease and pernicious anemia

  • viruses, parasites, fungi, and bacteria other than H. pylori

What is a migraine headache?

A migraine headache is a form of vascular headache. Migraine headache is caused by vasodilatation (enlargement of blood vessels) that causes the release of chemicals from nerve fibers that coil around the large arteries of the brain. Enlargement of these blood vessels stretches the nerves that coil around them and causes the nerves to release chemicals. The chemicals cause inflammation, pain, and further enlargement of the artery. The increasing enlargement of the arteries magnifies the pain.
Migraine attacks commonly activate the sympathetic nervous system in the body. The sympathetic nervous system is often thought of as the part of the nervous system that controls primitive responses to stress and pain, the so-called "fight or flight" response, and this activation causes many of the symptoms associated with migraine attacks; for example, the increased sympathetic nervous activity in the intestine causes nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • Sympathetic activity also delays emptying of the stomach into the small intestine and thereby prevents oral medications from entering the intestine and being absorbed.

  • The impaired absorption of oral medications is a common reason for the ineffectiveness of medications taken to treat migraine headaches.

  • The increased sympathetic activity also decreases the circulation of blood, and this leads to pallor of the skin as well as cold hands and feet.

  • The increased sympathetic activity also contributes to the sensitivity to light and sound sensitivity as well as blurred vision.
Migraine afflicts 28 million Americans, with females suffering more frequently (17%) than males (6%). Missed work and lost productivity from migraine create a significant public burden. Nevertheless, migraine still remains largely underdiagnosed and undertreated. Less than half of individuals with migraine are diagnosed by their doctors.

Improve Asthma

Asthma is common condition that affects thousands of people all over the world. There is no cure for asthma but there are definite ways to improve your quality of life. Living with asthma can be easy as long as you can figure out what triggers your asthma attacks and how to avoid these triggers. By improving your stamina, avoiding triggers, and taking the right precautions you can live a happy, healthy life with asthma.
  1. Stop smoking. Smoking is a very nasty, unhealthy habit. Regardless of its danger to the body, smoking is also a toxic pollutant. Smoking decreases lung functioning which in a person with asthma lung function is already decreased due to inflammation and narrowing of the airways. If you smoke and don’t have asthma, smoking cigarettes can actually cause you to develop asthma.  Not only does smoking affect asthma but also secondhand smoke is the leading irritant for people with asthma. If you live with someone who smokes, make him or her smoke outside. This decreases your exposure to the secondhand smoke, which is sometimes deadlier than smoking itself. Purchase an air filter to eliminate remanence of smoke within your home. Although your best bet is to stop smoking or get your family to stop smoking.
  1. Increase your water intake. We all know that the body is made up of 75% of water, however most people don’t take in enough water on a daily basis. Our body excretes water very easily through digestion, going to the bathroom, spit, and sweat. All of this water needs to be replaced somehow. It is recommended to drink 8, 8 ounce glasses of water a day. Who do you know that does this? Well whatever the reason is that you don’t, its time to start doing it. If you have an adversity to water, drinking tea or adding lemon to your water is also good for you.  When you have asthma, rapid breathing can cause dehydration. Therefore avoiding dehydration is easily mastered by drinking enough liquids throughout the day.
  2. Breath from the diaphragm. The diaphragm is the most efficient muscle used to help breathing. However when someone has asthma the diaphragm can become weak and flattened due to the increased pressure during asthma attacks. The diaphragm is important to effectively breathe in oxygen rich air and breath out the by-product carbon dioxide. To strengthen the diaphragm do exercises in breathing 3-4 times a day for about 5 minutes. You can sit or lay down but to do it correctly. Your belly should push outward when you breathe in and the abdominals should contract when you breathe out.If you start to have an asthma attack, it is important to slow down the breathing process. This allows more oxygen rich air to enter the body and keep the pressure within the lungs the same as outside the body. If not breathing becomes too rapid and shallow which increases the pressure negatively and doesn’t allow enough oxygen rich air into the lungs. Take deep, slow breaths while relaxing the entire body, which reduces the demand upon the body.
  1. Swim. Swimming is the best cardiovascular exercise for the body.  Additionally for people who have asthma it also seems to lessen the spasm of the bronchial tubes. If you don’t like water or can’t swim walking or biking are also good to improve cardiovascular stamina. Start slow and build up. Don’t over do yourself. If you feel a spasm coming on stop exercising.
  2. Don’t stop your medications. It is never a good idea to stop taking a prescribed medication without consulting your doctor, especially if the medication is for asthma. Inhalers are an important lifeline for people with asthma and have saved many lives. If you are trying to control your asthma through alternative medicine, I applaud you; however keep your inhaler for extenuating circumstances. Additional asthma medications are available for people with acute asthma. Anti-inflammatories and Bronchodilators are the two types of medications on the market. Anti-inflammatories reduce the swelling of the airways while bronchodilators relieve the symptoms of asthma. Talk to your doctor about the medications you are on and what can be done for additional relief.
  3. Check your allergies. Many people who have asthma have additional allergies, which can trigger an asthma attack. Allergies are an immune disorder, which causes hypersensitivity to specific environmental allergens.  A simple allergy test can be done to see if desensitization shots may help relieve the problem. Ask your doctor about allergy testing.

How to Keep Yourself Healthy?

Holistic health, should be seen from an integral point of view, taking into consideration several aspects such as :
NutritionWe should always get an adequate nutrition, it is necessary to have a balanced combination of the following elements : Minerals, Vitamins, Proteins, Carbohydrates, Fats, Fibers, Pure water, Oxygen, Sunlight
A good combination of these elements provides the correct nutrition that the body requires.
Positive attitude. It is essential to keep stress low. These keeps the immune system in good condition which produces as a consequence, good health. Stress, on the other hand, tenses neck and back muscles which causes some vertebras in the spinal column to move and dislocate provoking a series of disorders.
Spinal Column. Keeping the spinal column in good condition is important to optimum health. Correct posture, sleeping on a good mattress, and keeping stress low, plus correct nutrition are required factors for maintaining the skeletal system in good health.
Exercise. Exercising daily is also am essential factor for good health, Exercise stimulates the organs like the heart and joints, and in general, activates the whole body, giving vitality even to the farthest cell.
Hygiene. Hygiene for the body is as essential to good health as the other elements. Taking a bath or shower everyday, scrubbing your skin with a gentle loofah or body scrub 2 times a week, brushing your teeth and flossing, cleaning the colon periodically, as well as fasting, which eliminates toxins in the organism.
Recommended Food Supplements :
  • Aloe Vera Juice - natural antibiotic, cell regenerator, energizer, nutritive.

Swine Flue

Swine flu (swine influenza) is a disease of pigs. It is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by one of many Influenza A viruses. Approximately 1% to 4% of pigs that get swine flu die from it. It is spread among pigs by direct and indirect contact, aerosols, and from pigs that are infected but do not have symptoms. In many parts of the world pigs are vaccinated against swine flu.

Most commonly, swine flu is of the flu H1N1 influenza subtype. However, they can sometimes come from the other types, such as H1N2, H3N1, and H3N2.

The current outbreak of swine flu that has infected humans is of the H1N1 type – this type is not as dangerous as some others.
Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) can also infect pigs

Avian flu and human seasonal flu viruses can infect pigs, as well as swine influenza. The H3N2 influenza virus subtype, a virulent one, is thought to have come from pigs – it went on to infect humans.

It is possible for pigs to be infected with more than one flu virus subtype simultaneously. When this happens the genes of the viruses have the opportunity to mingle. When different flu subtypes mix they can create a new virus which contains the genes from several sources – a reassortant virus.

What is strep throat? What is sore throat?
Although swine influenza tends to just infect pigs, they can, and sometimes do, jump the species barrier and infect humans.

What is the risk for human health?

Outbreaks of human infection from a virus which came from pigs (swine influenza) do happen and are sometimes reported. Symptoms will generally be similar to seasonal human influenzas – this can range from mild or no symptoms at all, to severe and possibly fatal pneumonia.

As swine flu symptoms are similar to typical human seasonal flu symptoms, and other upper respiratory tract infections, detection of swine flu in humans often does not happen, and when it does it is usually purely by chance through seasonal influenza surveillance. If symptoms are mild it is extremely unlikely that any connection to swine influenza is found – even if it is there. In other words, unless the doctors and experts are specifically looking for swine flu, it is rarely detected. Because of this, we really do not know what the true human infection rate is.
Examples of known swine flu infecting humans

Since the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) implementation of IHR (2005) in 2007, they have been notified of swine influenza cases from the USA and Spain.

In March/April 2009 human cases of influenza A swine fever (H1N1) were first reported in California and Texas. Later other states also reported cases. A significant number of human cases during the same period have also been reported in Mexico – starting just in Mexico City, but now throughout various parts of the country. More cases are being reported in Canada, Europe, and New Zealand – mainly from people who have been in Mexico.

Coronary Artery Disease -What You Need to Know

By: Blubert Tavedorn

Coronary Artery Disease is commonly known as Heart Disease orAtherosclerosis. In coronary artery disease, plaque builds up inside the arteries. These plaques are formed by fats and cause the arteries to harden. The deposits are made of fat that came from the food that we eat. These fat deposits narrow the arteries and impede circulation. The narrowing of the arteries also causes high blood pressure because the body tries to compensate for the inadequate supply of blood throughout the system.

Fat deposits in arteries are very dangerous. Aside from the fact that these arteries should not be present in the arteries, these deposits also cause a disturbance in the heart's normal functioning. The blood vessels with fat deposits are narrowed. It also causes hardening that inhibits the normal elastic function of the vessels. It causes decreased blood flow to the heart which results in chest pain called angina.

Angina occurs when the heart doesn't have enough supply of oxygen for it to function properly. The heart muscles need oxygen for them to function because it is necessary for the energy formation of muscles that it uses for working. Without adequate energy, muscles will fail to work. Angina is described as a painful squeezing feeling in the chest that is also felt in the jaws, extremities and the back.

A heart attack occurs after angina. The heart ceases to function because its muscles did not receive much oxygen. Certain muscles in the heart have died because of the inadequate supply of oxygen and therefore the remaining muscles have to compensate for the loss. Compensation gives extra workload and fatigue, causing it to stop.

There are a lot of factors that cause coronary heart disease. One of them is a major risk factor that can't be avoided and that is family history. If your family is known to have coronary heart disease, then you will likely also have the condition. Little is known about this theory but it is very consistent among patients with coronary heart disease.

If you are living a sedentary or inactive lifestyle, it is now time to change your ways and to do some serious physical work. A sedentary lifestyle will increase your risk of developing heart disease because without physical activities, your heart muscles will become flabby and weak. You need to do some simple exercises to tone your heart muscles and make it strong.

Obesity also increases the chance of having heart disease. Fat is a major contributory factor for the development of heart disease and people who are obese or overweight have a lot of fat stored in their bodies. These fats need to be burned down to lose weight and prevent having serious complications such as heart disease.

All in all, heart disease is caused by living an inappropriate lifestyle. Keep in mind that no matter how rich you are, it is not an excuse for you not to work. Exercise should also be a regular habit so that your muscles will be tougher and can reach their optimum functioning.

How to Get Pregnant

Wondering how to get pregnant? Maximize your fertility — and know when to seek help. Some couples seem to get pregnant simply by talking about it. For others, it takes plenty of patience and a bit of luck. If you're wondering how to get pregnant, start the old-fashioned way. Here's what you need to know — and when to seek help.
Understanding when you're most fertileConception is based on an intricate series of events. Every month, hormones from your pituitary gland stimulate your ovaries to release an egg, or ovulate. Once the egg is released, it travels to one of the fallopian tubes. If you want to conceive, now's the time. But how can you tell when you're ovulating? For many women, it's like hitting a moving target. Keep an eye on the calendarUse your day planner or another simple calendar to mark the day your period begins each month. Also track the number of days each period lasts. If you have a consistent 28-day cycle, ovulation is likely to begin about 14 days after the day your last period began. If your cycles are somewhat long, subtract 18 from the number of days in your shortest cycle. When your next period begins, count ahead this many days. The next week is a reasonable guess for your most fertile days.
Pros. Calendar calculations can be done simply on paper.
Cons. Many factors may affect the exact timing of ovulation, including illness, stress and exercise. Counting days is often inaccurate, especially for women who have irregular cycles.
Watch for changes in cervical mucusJust before ovulation, you might notice an increase in clear, slippery vaginal secretions — if you look for it. These secretions typically resemble raw egg whites. After ovulation, when the odds of becoming pregnant are slim, the discharge will become cloudy and sticky or disappear entirely.
Pros. Changes in vaginal secretions are often an accurate sign of impending fertility. Simple observation — particularly inside the vagina — is all that's needed.
Cons. Judging the texture or appearance of vaginal secretions can be fairly subjective.
Track your basal body temperatureThis is your body's temperature when you're fully at rest. Ovulation may cause a slight increase in temperature — typically less than one degree. You'll be most fertile during the two to three days before your temperature rises. You can assume ovulation has occurred when the slightly higher temperature remains steady for three days or more. Use an oral thermometer to monitor your basal body temperature. Try the digital variety or one specifically designed to measure basal body temperature. Simply take your temperature every morning before you get out of bed. Plot the readings on graph paper and look for a pattern to emerge.
Pros. It's simple. The only cost is the thermometer. It's often most helpful to determine when you've ovulated and judge if the timing is consistent from month to month.
Cons. The temperature change may be subtle, and the increase comes too late for conception — after ovulation has already happened. It can be inconvenient to take your temperature at the same time every day, especially if you have irregular sleeping hours.
Try an ovulation predictor kitOver-the-counter ovulation kits test your urine for the surge in hormones that takes place before ovulation. For the most accurate results, follow the instructions on the label to the letter.
Pros. Ovulation kits can identify the most likely time of ovulation or even provide a signal before ovulation actually happens. They're available without a prescription in most pharmacies.
Cons. Ovulation kits often lead to excessively targeted sex — and timing sex so precisely can invite being too late. For some women, the cost of ovulation kits is prohibitive.
Maximizing fertility When you're trying to conceive, consider these simple do's and don'ts. Do:
Have sex regularly. If you consistently have sex two or three times a week, you're almost certain to hit a fertile period at some point. For healthy couples who want to conceive, there's no such thing as too much sex. For many couples, this may be all it takes.
Have sex once a day near the time of ovulation. Daily intercourse during the days leading up to ovulation may increase the odds of conception. Although your partner's sperm concentration will drop slightly each time you have sex, the reduction isn't usually an issue for healthy men.
Make healthy lifestyle choices. Maintain a healthy weight, include physical activity in your daily routine, eat a healthy diet, limit caffeine and keep stress under control. The same good habits will serve you and your baby well during pregnancy.
Consider preconception planning. Your health care provider can assess your overall health and help you identify lifestyle changes that may improve your chances for a healthy pregnancy. Preconception planning is especially helpful if you or your partner have any health issues.
Take your vitamins. Folic acid (vitamin B-9) plays an essential role in a baby's development. A daily prenatal vitamin or folic acid supplement beginning a few months before conception significantly reduces the risk of spina bifida and other neural tube defects.
Don't:
Smoke. Tobacco changes the cervical mucus, which may keep sperm from reaching the egg. Smoking may also increase the risk of miscarriage and deprive your developing baby of oxygen and nutrients. If you smoke, ask your health care provider to help you quit before conception. For your family's sake, vow to quit for good.
Drink alcohol. Alcohol is off-limits if you're pregnant — or hope to be.
Take medication without your health care provider's OK. Certain medications — even those available without a prescription — can make it difficult to conceive. Others may not be safe once you're pregnant.
When to consult a doctor With frequent unprotected sex, most healthy couples conceive within one year. Others need a bit of help. If you're in your early 30s or younger and you and your partner are in good health, try it on your own for one year before consulting a doctor. You may want to seek help sooner if you're age 35 or older, or you or your partner has known or suspected fertility issues. Infertility affects men and women equally — and treatment is available. Depending on the source of the problem, your gynecologist, your partner's urologist or your family doctor may be able to help. In some cases, a fertility specialist may offer the best hope.
